In our global and multilingual world, the study of a second language is rewarding and beneficial, in academic, professional and personal ways. These benefits include:

• An understanding of how language is constructed, enhancing oral and written communication.
• The development of cognitive, critical thinking and analytical skills.
• Confidence in self-expression and articulation.
• An appreciation of different cultures, that expands horizons and fosters awareness of others.

The study of a second language at ATAR level attracts a ‘bonus’ of 10% of the total of the language score. The bonus is added to the student’s Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA), before the calculation of their ATAR. The bonus is added regardless of whether the language course is one of the student’s top four ATAR subjects.

Course Outline
Year 10 French is a year-long course that is a continuation of the Year 9 French course. This subject aims to make learning the French language both fun and interesting for all students. Incorporated into the program are various cultural activities such as language games, drama, food appreciation, music, cinema and the use of interactive computer games. These are designed to enhance the use of the French language in everyday situations and to complement the units of study. Students develop greater confidence in communicating in both spoken and written French.

This subject integrates linguistic and cultural components by focusing on the following topics:

• House and home
• Daily routine
• Past Events
• Food and shopping
• Health

Students of French in Year 10 or 11 will be afforded the opportunity to participate in the biannual Tour to France. Students are also invited to participate in a French restaurant experience as part of the course.

Assessment
Students will be assessed in speaking, writing, listening, and reading, and there will be an examination at the end of Semester Two.
