YEAR 10 MEDIA OVERVIEW

Prerequsite: Nil. Recommended that students have a minimum of B in English.

Year 10 Media Production and Analysis is designed to prepare students for further studies in Years 11 and 12. In this unit of study, students will be exposed to a range of media topics. Each topic will include a variety of learning outcomes and students will be required to engage in both theoretical and practical types of learning. Each unit also features a research and written/oral component.

Semester One (Personal Experience)
The focus for this unit is personal experience of the media. Students examine familiar fictional texts, analysing stars and stereotypes from easily accessible forms such as TV, radio, film or video games This is a basic introduction to the language of media and how audiences’ cultural experiences influence their responses to the media. They learn basic production processes and create their own productions.

Possible assessed content include: written response to movie posters and their construction, investigation into the representation of stereotypes and their naturalisation in society, a case-study into the Teen Drama genre and the production of a Television Drama.

Semester Two (Point of View)
The focus for this unit is an introduction to point of view. In this unit, students will be introduced to the concept and learn how a point of view can be constructed in non-fiction texts. They will analyse familiar non-fiction media work and consolidate their production skills by demonstrating an understanding of point of view in their own productions.

Possible assessed content include: an investigation into Internet communication through social networking, the production of a Current Affair film and the production of a sample magazine targeted towards a specific audience, including production of a biased feature article.

This subject is typically for students who enter the course with limited experience, knowledge and understanding of media but with the goal of enrolling in ATAR Media Production and Analysis in Year 11. It is highly recommended that students have a minimum of B in English to enrol due to the analytical nature of the course.
