Rationale
Through interaction with the natural world, Outdoor Education aims to develop an understanding of our relationships with the environment, others and ourselves. Outdoor Education in Year 10 is aimed at developing the practical skills and knowledge necessary for people to responsibly participate in a range of activities in the natural environment. The knowledge, understanding and skills gained through outdoor experiences may be transferred and applied to life and a range of careers and situations
Course Outline
Students will plan and participate in a wide range of outdoor activities, such as snorkelling, bushwalking, canoeing and abseiling. They are also introduced to basic camping and navigation skills, apply risk management strategies and become familiar with leadership styles and strategies to work effectively with others. Skills are taught that students may use to minimise their impact on the environment and learn about the natural history and management of areas that they visit. Outdoor Education is based on the experiential learning cycle. This cycle is made up of three stages; plan, do and review. The course assessment types are based on these three stages.
Course Requirements
All students will be required to have a safe and responsible approach to all activities. Students must also be willing to take part in the compulsory practical activities, expeditions and day trips. Students must participate in an overnight expedition and a day excursion during each semester unit.
