Wood Technology
This course aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of woodworking, using both hand and machine tools. Students learn basic frame and carcass construction, and practice producing a large variety of woodworking joints as used in the furniture and cabinet making industry. This course will include a mixture of structured projects that provide skills-based knowledge, but also allow for the opportunity for students to express their individuality through the design and manufacture of their own work.
Students complete design portfolio work, through completing some investigation into existing designs or a problem, concept sketch development, learning industry standard 3D modelling software and producing technical drawings to follow in the manufacture of the several small practical projects that students produce. Projects include a chess board box with all individually designed pieces, a small table, blue-tooth speaker, mechanical puzzle, and a lathe-turned object.
The Year 10 Wood Technology course prepares students for the upper school Year 11 and 12 General course, helping students pursue directly related careers such as cabinet making, carpentry, furniture design and making. However, the skills learnt can be applied to many other creative, manufacture or industrial design industries.
